The tower was built in the 2nd half of the 15th century by expanding the city walls. After the town fortifications began to be gradually demolished in 1808, only the tower remained and served residential purposes, for which it was used until the end of the 19th century. In the 1980s a fire caused major damage. A complete renovation took place in 2009.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the fortress of the Cheb Castle lost its importance and in 1808 its gradual demolition began. All gates and the adjoining towers were removed step by step. Only the mill tower, which served as living space until the end of the 19th century, remained. Since then, however, it has gradually deteriorated. In the 1980s, the mill tower, which had already been severely damaged, caught a fire, after which it was covered again. A complete renovation of the mill tower did not take place until 2009.
