The Marschiertor was part of the outer ring of Aachen's fortifications and withstood sieges and attacks for centuries. When the fortress walls were demolished during the expansion of Aachen, the Marschiertor escaped destruction and was preserved. It was badly damaged in the Second World War, but was later carefully repaired.

The former border gate to Burtscheid was part of the city wall in the 13th century and was primarily used as the main weapon headquarters. Together with ten other city gates and a ring of walls, the construction of the Marching Gate enabled the city to be well defended. Today the building is the headquarters of the Oecher Penn city guard, who also donated the sculpture by Klaus Gehlen, which commemorates the gate guards of the time, the Penn soldiers. In the evening it is worth taking a walk around the building, which is bathed in a warm light in the dark.
