This octagonal chapel of the Sorrowful Virgin Mary and the Holy Cross is over 300 years old and stands on the Cross Hill (Křížová hora) in the south of the city. Its roof is crowned by a patriarchal cross (double cross) above the tower lantern. In 1658, the Jesuit preacher Michal Koppe had the so-called Spanish wooden cross with a part of the Holy Cross inserted installed here, which was supposed to protect the city from storms and natural disasters. It was the "weather cross" that was popular at the time and was found in many Central European countries along the Danube. The desire for a larger brick chapel grew among the city's population. It was built with the help of the magistrate, Prince Johann Christian I of Eggenberg and his wife in 1710. The illustrated niche chapels at the stations of the associated Way of the Cross are also worth seeing.
