St. Peter, the Peterskirche behind the Marienplatz, is the oldest parish church in Munich, whose expansion in Romanesque style is mentioned as early as 1181. Its tower, which has about 300 steps leading up to its observation deck, and which the people of Munich call Peter, is one of the city's best vantage points, and at the same time houses the oldest bells and clocks in Munich.
