The castle was built in the years of 1742-1756 in the style of the late Baroque as a four-winged complex. In 1934, the castle wing was demolished to Marktgasse. Today there is the city administration (cultural office), the city archive Eisenach, and since 1931 the Thuringian museum in it.

The baroque city palace once served as a ducal residence. Today, the Thuringian Museum Eisenach presents its diverse collections in the magnificent rooms. After years of renovation work, the historic Rococo Hall can now be visited again. Anyone who looks at the impressive facade of the Eisenach City Palace on the north side of the market square can hardly believe that the architect cleverly incorporated six venerable town houses. In 1755, the Duke of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach moved into the stately residence and numerous famous visitors - such as Goethe and Mrs. von Stein, Telemann and Richard Wagner - came to visit.Today, the City Palace houses the Tourist Information and the Thuringian Museum Eisenach.Source:eisenach.info/kunst-und-kultur/museen/stadtschloss
