The construction of Fürstenberg Castle was initiated in 1219 by Archbishop Engelbert I of Cologne to protect the Electoral Cologne property around Bacharach and the Cologne customs. From 1243 it was owned by the Wittelsbach Counts Palatine as a fief. It served as an "Vorwerk" to the Palatine Castle Stahleck. In the middle of the 13th century, the castle is said to have been destroyed as a "robbery", but then rebuilt.
