Columbus died on May 20, 1506 and was buried in the convent of San Francisco, of which barely a trace remains. Three years later, his mortal remains were transferred to the Cartuja monastery in Seville.

The Christopher Columbus Monument in Seville Cathedral is an impressive mausoleum designed by sculptor Arturo Mélida. This monument, inaugurated in 1902, depicts four heralds holding Columbus's coffin, symbolizing the four historical kingdoms of Spain: Castile, Leon, Aragon and Navarre.
