The tile art in the Plaza de España in Seville is truly impressive and full of symbolism. Designed by Aníbal González for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, the square features over 7,000 colourful ceramic tiles known as azulejos. These tiles are typically Andalusian and depict historical events, provincial coats of arms and maps representing all the Spanish provinces.
A special feature is the 48 niches along the crescent-shaped pavilion, which depict scenes from Spanish history and mythology. The tiles are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also tell stories about Spain’s rich culture and history.
