Since 1867, Altona, once the second largest city in the Kingdom of Denmark after Copenhagen, was Prussian as part of the province of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1871 it also became part of the newly created German Empire, which was now headed by the Prussian King Wilhelm as Emperor Wilhelm I. This equestrian statue was created in his honor in front of the Altona town hall in 1898. The sisters Schleswig and Holstein sit on the base, above them a youth martially raising his left fist symbolizes the military strength of Prussia.

Kaiser Wilhelm I1 was the first German emperor of the newly developing German state. Wilhelm lived from March 22, 1797 to March 9, 1888. Under his rule and at his side, the first German Chancellor, Prince Otto von Bismarck, ruled. Both personalities are honored with statues and monuments in numerous German cities.

The equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I was created by the Berlin sculptor Professor Gustav Eberlein and has stood in front of the Altona town hall since 1898, framed by a cornflower mosaic.
It symbolizes the 50th anniversary of Schleswig-Holstein's uprising against Denmark - but also Altona's time in Prussia, to which the city had belonged since 1867.

On the base you can see the two sisters Schleswig and Holstein as well as a young man who represents the military strength of Prussia.
