In 1168, near Freiberg in Saxony, merchants discovered shiny stones with an unusually high silver content. This led to the establishment of the first mining settlements in the region and attracted numerous miners and fortune seekers. Margrave Otto von Meißen recognized the potential and released mining for everyone. Within a few years, numerous ore veins were discovered and exploited, which contributed to the prosperity and cultural flowering of Saxony. Today, Freiberg mining, as part of the Ore Mountains, is an important historical and cultural part of the region.

The Freiberg mining landscape is the oldest and most important silver mining area in the Ore Mountains. The figure of the miner embodies Freiberg's mining history. The beginnings of the mining capital Freiberg lie on the Schüppchenberg, where the miner stands. It is said that the legendary silver discovery took place here in 1168. The elder miners depicted had a special role; they represented the interests of the miners and organized social security. According to the sculptor Friedhelm Schelter, the miner shows that prosperity and happiness come from hard work and honest work.
