Hans Carl von Carlowitz, actually Johann "Hannß" Carl von Carlowitz, was a German cameralist, royal Polish and electoral Saxon chamberlain and mining councillor, and chief mining officer of the Ore Mountains. He wrote the first complete work on forestry with Sylvicultura oeconomica, or household report and natural instructions for wild tree cultivation (1713) and is considered to be the main creator of the concept of forest sustainability.
