Alexander von Humboldt studied mining and mining in Freiberg from 1791 and graduated after 8 months (normally this course lasted three years). He got up at 5 a.m., examined the mines with their narrow passages and shafts, took rock samples and examined them at home. At noon he attended the academy and often sat at his desk until late at night, studying. At the age of just 20 he was appointed mountain assessor. The skills learned in Freiberg also equipped him for his long research trips.
