The elegant, large-scale baroque building was built in 1780 in a very narrow row of houses as an inn ("Zur Stadt Mannheim") for Johann Külp, probably based on a design by the Electorate of the Palatinate court architect F.W. Rabaliatti from Mannheim.
The building has ten axes with a mansard roof and a two-axis gable. There is a delicate skylight grille in the middle portal passage. The north and south wings were built at the same time, the east wing followed in 1792.
The building was Blücher's headquarters when he crossed the Rhine with his troops at Pfalzgrafenstein at the turn of the year 1813/14.
