The name of this monument 'Het Apeldoornsche Bosch' refers to the Jewish psychiatric institution where the mentally ill were treated in modern, spacious pavilions according to the new Stein insights, in nature and far from the big city.

Fate struck on the night of 21 to 22 January 1943. The Jewish psychiatric institution Het Apeldoornsche Bosch was evacuated and approximately 1,400 people were transported. Most of them (approximately 1,130) were taken to Auschwitz; a smaller number (approximately 270) ended up in Camp Westerbork.
