The name of this monument, "Het Apeldoornsche Bosch," refers to the Jewish psychiatric institution where the mentally ill were treated in modern, spacious pavilions according to the new Stein principles, surrounded by nature and far from the city.

Disaster struck during the night of January 21-22, 1943. The Jewish psychiatric institution Het Apeldoornsche Bosch was evacuated, and approximately 1,400 people were deported. Most (around 1,130) were deported to Auschwitz; a smaller number (around 270) ended up in Camp Westerbork.
