Disaster struck during the night of January 21-22, 1943. The Jewish psychiatric institution Het Apeldoornsche Bosch was evacuated, and approximately 1,400 people were deported. Most (around 1,130) were deported to Auschwitz; a smaller number (around 270) ended up in Camp Westerbork.
