After a bomb hit literally wiped out the Neptune Fountain, the site remained empty until a new building was decided at the end of the 1970s. When the excavation pit was excavated, the remains of the old well were discovered, which have been exhibited in the Residenz Museum in Neuhaus Castle since 2018. The artist Josef Rikus created a new Neptune figure for Paderborn in 1979.

The Neptune fountain had originally stood in the courtyard of the castle Neuhäuser Residenzschlosses. Prince-Bishop Clemens August von Bayern (1719-1761) gave it to the citizens of the city. In 1730 it was placed on the market and supplemented by a created by the sculptor Johann Theodor Axer Neptune figure.

In the middle of the market square stands the modern Neptune Fountain, a work by the Paderborn artist Josef Rikus from 1977 to 1979. The fountain stands there as the successor to a historical “Kumpes” with the sea god Neptune, which was destroyed in 1945.
