    It is “Werther”, the scandalous book of the 18th century. “Unbelievable, the youth of today…!”

      The Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf, which opened in 1956, is one of the three representative Goethe museums in Germany, alongside the Goethe House in Frankfurt am Main and the Goethe National Museum in Weimar.

      The museum is sponsored by the Anton and Katharina Kippenberg Foundation and the state capital Düsseldorf. With the purchase of Kippenberg's Goethe collection, the city of Düsseldorf “created a new field of Goethe's charisma”. In the foundation agreement of February 13, 1953, the city of Düsseldorf committed itself to equipping, maintaining and developing the museum.

      The museum has been headed by Christof Wingertszahn since 2013. He is also the executive director of the Anton and Katharina Kippenberg Foundation.

      Previous directors were:

      Hellmuth von Maltzahn (1900–1966), director of the museum: 1955–1965;
      Jörn Göres (1931–2004), director of the museum: 1966–1992;
      Volkmar Hansen (* 1945), director of the museum: 1993–2012
      The institution includes the museum, the manuscript archive, the research library, the art collection and an event center. It houses around 50,000 original evidence of Goethe's time, "including autographs (letters, work manuscripts, family register entries, music manuscripts), first editions and dedicated copies, graphics (portraits, vedute, illustrations), hand drawings (of which almost 50 by Goethe), oil paintings, silhouettes, Busts, masks, coins, medals and plaques as well as a porcelain and glass collection”. An extensive collection of sheet music from the works set to music by Goethe and his contemporaries, text and song books, playbills and concert and festival programs from Goethe's time complements the collection.
