You will not have missed the fact that Maastricht is located in Dutch Limburg, practically on the border with Belgian Limburg. In other words: Maastricht is anything but - literally - the heart of the Netherlands. The dialect of Maastricht will not get you very far in the Netherlands either.

So what is Maastricht? You can look at it historically and, for example, talk about the connection with Liège and a place in Limburg. But you can also look at it from an overarching perspective. And that is what Maastricht does.

To start with, there is the Maastricht Treaty that established the European Union, paved the way for the euro and created EU citizenship. Moreover, Maastricht is part of one of the so-called Euregions, the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, around the pentagon Hasselt-Maastricht-Liège-Aachen-Eupen. Then there is the University of Maastricht, which gives the city an international dimension. Just take a walk in the city parks on a sunny day. You will also see the focus on that international, European dimension in the communication of various educational institutions.

And of course there is more. Just take a look at this page of 'Ons Limburgs Museum': ons.limburgsmuseum.nl/en/story/aan-de-rand-van-nederland-of-in-het-hart-van-europa-waar-ligt-jouw-limburg/234067?slide=17 which asks the question "On the periphery of the Netherlands or at the heart of Europe: where is your Limburg?".
The page for Maastricht King's Day 2022 started with the question "How does it feel as a city to be in the heart of Europe?". And on that same page you can read: 'Maastricht Meet Europe' is palpable everywhere in the city with a reference to the location of the headquarters of the European Institute for Public Affairs (EIPA) and Studio Europa on the route that was mapped out at the time. See koningsdag.bezoekmaastricht.nl/blog/koningsdag/de-koninklijke-route

And, yes, last but not least there is history. For example, people like to refer to Maastricht's place in that great Roman Empire. City marketing? Of course. But based on facts that you cannot ignore and a truly international character. If you have not felt that, you have not visited Maastricht.

PS: there are multiple stars. Not only here, but also on the other side of the Maas in Céramique. And that star also has to do with Maastricht itself. Because there are not only the stars of the EU flag. The flag of Maastricht consists of a red field with a white five-pointed star.

A theater college, an art college and a conservatory contribute to making Maastricht a cultural center of national importance. The philharmonie zuidnederland (previously Limburg's symphony orkest) is the classic orchestra of the provinces of Limburg, Noord-Brabant and Zeeland with headquarters in Maastricht and Eindhoven. Opera Zuid is a small opera company headquartered in Maastricht. There is also a professional theater group: Toneelgroep Maastricht. The city has several theaters such as the Theater aan het Vrijthof (concert and playhouse) and the Derlon Theater (Toneelgroep Maastricht). There are also three cinemas in Maastricht, the Lumière, the Pathé and the Euroscoop.

A big star in the middle of Plein 1992 in Maastricht. With the text "Maastricht Meet Europe." On Friday, she was placed there in the presence of alderman Vivianne Heijnen and MEPs Sven Schulze and Jeroen Lenaers.
The latter two were visiting the Maastricht International Center. This has a combined counter for the Holland Expat Center and the Grensinfopunt. There, (highly qualified) newcomers and border workers are helped with all kinds of facilities. The counter is in Center Ceramique, the library of Maastricht.
