The Bisschopsmolen is a medium water mill on the Jeker in the center of the Dutch city of Maastricht.

According to a less reliable tradition, the mill dates from the 7th century, the time of the bishops of Maastricht. Another tradition places the explanation of the present name in the 11th century, when the owner of the mill, Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, leased part of his possessions, including the mill, to the Bishop of Liège to finance his participation in the First Crusade. It included the stipulation that the pledged possessions would come to the bishop if the duke did not return from the crusade. When the duke, who was unmarried and childless, died in Jerusalem in 1099, the mill thus became episcopal property and from then on was called Bishop's Mill.

A must-see when visiting Maastricht: the Bisschopsmolen. This watermill can be found in the idyllic Jekerkwartier. The mill was owned by Godfried van Bouillon in the 11th century and after his death it was owned by the Prince-Bishop of Liège. The Bisschopsmolengang leads to the rear (the facade dates from 1609), where you can see the wheel of this water mill. A place that is very suitable for Instagram! You can sit down briefly on the wall and eat a piece of cake, of course like the locals by hand. Since 2005 the mill has been reunited with the traditional bakery. The products of the centuries-old Landwirt-Müller-Bäcker production chain can be seen, smelled and tasted in the Bisschopsmolen and the adjacent traditional bakery on the Stenenbrug. As part of a guided tour, you can experience the entire authentic process after a piece of Limburg spelled cake. The miller grinds the original Kollenberger spelled grain in the restored watermill and the baker uses it to bake delicious and healthy types of bread and pastries.

The Bisschopsmolen was a ban mill of the Prince-Bishop of Liège and existed since 1099. From the 15th century the mill was used as a malt mill for the breweries in the city.

Definitely a location to visit and let the wheel spin before your eyes :-)
