Hiking
During the construction of the docks around 1850, a staircase was provided that led directly to the mooring fishing boats. Most of the catch went to the shipowner, because the sale had to be able to cover the costs of the ship. The rest was divided among the crew. What they did not need themselves, they sold fresh daily at that staircase, which was soon popularly referred to as 'the fish ladder'. The staircase has now disappeared, but the name remained. Ostend still owes part of its charm to the quay and its surroundings.
