As early as the 16th century, there were reports of mining activities in a silver mine on the southern slope of the Plattenberg, and there was also said to have been a Silberhaus accommodation facility for the miners. However, no silver ores were found here; it may have been silver iron ore like in Fichtelberg-Neubau. Furthermore, it was probably just an experimental dismantling, as nothing is recorded in the margrave's fief books.
An old path, the “Wunsiedler Steig”, ran through the mining area. It came from Bayreuth and led to the six-city metropolis of Wunsiedel; the B 303 didn't yet exist. Around 1827, the Bavarian state forest built a building on the Wunsiedler Steig for the forest guard, whose job was to curb the timber crime. The forest officer was authorized to provide simple food and drinks to passers-by.
