Around 1800 it served as a shelter for the "Schmiedmatzengirgel" from Nagel. He had killed an alleged rival out of jealousy and fled from his captors to the rock cave, where he hid for several years. At that time the cave was in Prussian territory, while Nagel belonged to Bavaria. When he ventured to his home town, he was betrayed, arrested, and judged with a sword in Kemnath.
