The Church of St. Peter has been part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002; it is also a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention.

The church was built from 1230 to 1269 as a three-aisled gallery basilica and renovated at the end of the 19th century. Despite the largely Romanesque construction, the four-storey wall elevation was based on the early Gothic style of French church architecture.

A very beautiful church located in the old town of Bacharach.

This late Romanesque basilica with galleries was built around 1230 and has shaped the medieval townscape of Bacharach ever since. The narrow space between Oberstraße and the hillside allowed for only a short church length on the rising terrain.

The ground plan and parts of the eastern masonry likely belong to a 12th-century predecessor, while the current church building was essentially constructed around 1230/40 and underwent some alterations in the 14th/15th centuries. The building is clearly influenced by forms of early French Gothic architecture.
