The Steinbach fortified church of St. Johannes Baptista is one of the landmarks of Steinbach am Wald. There is much to suggest that it emerged from a tower hill complex from the 13th century. At some point the tower probably got an extension that turned it into a chapel. By enlarging this extension, Steinbach got its first church around 1500. Hieronymus von Reitzenstein was Auxiliary Bishop of Bamberg until 1503. His coat of arms can be found on the reliquaries that were found during renovation work on the church between 1699 and 1701 and that were walled into the side altars. The first written testimony for a church in Steinbach is available for 1520.
