The mark honors the members of the regiment that fell in World War I, which was founded after the war of 1866 as "Infantry Regiment No. 80". On July 10, 1871, this had garrisoned in Homburg v.d.H. taken. Regiment chief was from 1888 Victoria, Empress Friedrich.

The monument, designed by the Frankfurt architect Schmalz and executed by the marble works Dyckerhoff & Neumann, Wetzlar, was unveiled on August 22, 1926. The figurative depiction shows a wounded lion rearing up in agony and defending the shot-up flag. It is a symbol for the fatherland, which was defeated in the war but nevertheless defended unity. The plinth, made of marble blocks, bears the first line of the originally planned text as an inscription on the front side under the regimental coat of arms and a wreath holder: "TO HONOR THE FALLEN / TO THE LIVING AS A REMINDER".
