One of the most prominent residents of Bad Homburg is Friedrich Hölderlin (* 20 March 1770 in Lauffen am Neckar, † 7 June 1843 in Tübingen). The poet stayed in Bad Homburg twice for two years. His unhappy love for the Frankfurt banker's wife Susette Gontard drove Hölderlin to Homburg the first time, and his increasingly deteriorating mental state the second time. His work Hyperion shaped an entire era. The monument in his honour in the Bad Homburg spa gardens was designed by the architect Louis Jacobi, and the relief was by the sculptor Jacob May.
