    Area description
The approximately 4.5 hectare old Bonames Airfield is part of the Frankfurt Green Belt and is therefore part of a huge network of protected landscape areas. In order to give nature the chance to develop again after the abandonment of the former American military airport, around 3 hectares of asphalt and concrete slabs were broken up and a large part of the former runway was reduced. Today rows of trees line the former runway and an adjacent meadow invites you to relax and observe nature. In order to be able to follow how quickly nature is reclaiming areas, the old concrete chunks were piled up to piles of rubble of different sizes and left to plants and animals. The hot piles of rubble and high meadows invite bush breeders in particular to stay. Between the runway and the tarmac, a water surface wet from backwater was created. Today this pond and the surrounding wetlands are home and resting place for many amphibians and birds. Altogether the area of the old Bonames airfield is home to 370 plant species, including the endangered centaury or the Ruhr flea herb. Furthermore, 369 animal species use this area. 70 of them are either on the Red List of Germany or Hesse. Accordingly, the area is an incredibly important breeding and resting place for many endangered and protected species. Therefore, between March 1st and July 15th, the breeding season of birds and also the development time of many amphibians, it is important to ensure that dogs are kept on a leash in order to be able to experience such a large biodiversity in the future.
