Who is Opsinjoorke? Opsinjoorke is the Mechelen mascot. He is part of the Mechelse Ommegang (every 25 years). The doll refers to drunkards and women walkers who were thrown into the air as punishment. Frans Van den Brande (°1935) made the bronze version of this statue in 1988.

The bronze statue in front of the town hall shows Opsinjoorke on the sheet. The original doll was made in 1647. We carry them in parades and parades. There we throw them up in a large linen cloth. She was originally called Sotscop or Dirty Bridegroom, a reference to drunken husbands who mistreated their wives. Divorce was out of the question at the time, and that is why the doll is symbolically punished (thrown up) for the sins of these men.

The doll was given its current name on July 4, 1775. During the procession in honor of a thousand years of veneration of St. Rumbold, she falls next to the curtain in the crowd. An Antwerp spectator puts out his arms to fend off the doll, but is accused of trying to rob the Sotscop. Some hotheads beat him up. The victim pleads his innocence in a protest letter to the Mechelen judge and demands compensation. Because the Sotscop lands on a sinjoor (nickname for an Antwerp resident), it has since been called Opsinjoorke.
