The cathedral, which is a World Heritage Site (UNESCO), was built in the Gothic style between 1200 and 1320 as a church in the first phase. It was consecrated on April 28, 1312. The church was also damaged in the city fire of 1342.
The vaulting of the central nave took place in 1437 and the choir in 1451.
The granting of an indulgence in 1451 and the visit of the Pope brought more pilgrims to Mechelen and the cathedral was enlarged over time.
In 1559, with the establishment of the Archbishopric of Mechelen, St. Rumbold became a cathedral.
