It is hard to believe, but less than fifty meters from the busy Sint-Baafsplein you will find an oasis of peace: the Achtersikkel.
With a little luck, your passage along this beautiful square with the two towers and the well will be graced by a violin solo or a piano concert by the students of the Ghent music conservatory.

De Achtersikkel owes its name to the wealthy patrician family Vander Sickelen, who enjoyed political and social prestige and owned the buildings around the beautiful courtyard for a long time. The brick corner tower belongs to the oldest part. The high round tower is made of sand-lime brick and finished with an octagonal stone belvedere in Renaissance style. The private well is proof of the wealth of the time, few could afford such luxury.
