The entire East Flemish cuisine under one roof
East Flanders has more than 175 traditional regional products. And in Ghent you will find them all under one roof! Handy, right?
The Groot Vleeshuis houses the Center for East Flemish Regional Products. You will find the complete offer there. Loose or in a gift basket. Of course you can also puzzle together a gift with goodies. And don't you want to wait any longer to taste? Reserve a table in the accompanying restaurant in advance. And enjoy the regional dishes on the spot!

    Age-old traditions
The meat house was originally a covered marketplace. In this hall, which dates from the 15th century, meat was centrally inspected and traded. Also because the sale of meat at home was prohibited in the Middle Ages. The delicious Ganda Ham now hangs to dry in the beautiful, open wooden truss. The ham is still traditionally salted and dried according to an age-old tradition.

A medieval hall from the early 15th century where you can find almost 200 East Flemish regional and how egg products and specialties. You can also consume them on site in the Promotion and Tasting Center for East Flemish Regional Products. The hams hang in the roof truss above your head. But there is much more. There are also group formulas for breakfast, lunch or upon reservation after 1800 hours for receptions or a walking buffet.
Meat was sold here from the 13th to the end of the 19th century, first in a wooden construction, later in a stone building. In that period, for reasons of hygiene and to centralize sales, meat could only be sold at designated places. This was the only place in Ghent. From 1884 this place was no longer just a meat hall and the meat could also be offered elsewhere. The building has undergone numerous refurbishments over the centuries, yet has retained an important part of its roof structure. The hall has already been given various functions: fruit and vegetable market, fishmonger, post office, storage space, multipurpose space and ... even temporarily as a parking lot.

The Promotion Center for East Flemish regional products, located in the Groot Vleeshuis in Ghent, is temporarily closed as a safety precaution.

Due to the extensive damage to the wooden roof structure, the stability and safety of the Groot Vleeshuis cannot be guaranteed. The City of Ghent (owner of the building) has announced that it will have maintenance works carried out in the short term to secure the affected elements. For example, the Promotion Center for regional products in the Groot Vleeshuis should be able to reopen by 19 July 2021.

From 01 June 2021 there will be a temporary pop-up location on the Goudenleeuwplein near the city hall. You can buy more than 175 regional products and also taste them on the sunny terrace.
