The Romans are said to have mined slate here for the construction of the Limes.
From the second half of the 17th century, slate was mined underground.
By the end of mining activity in 1972, the tunnel network had grown to 30 km.

A "Erbstollen" is used less for mining than for draining the water that accumulates in the mines. The term "Erbstollen" came from the fact that in a mining area the deepest tunnel not only drained the water from the mine belonging to it, but also "inherited" the waste water from higher-lying mines.
Next to the thick tower in Kaub, the sewage canal of the Wilhelm Erbstollen leads to the Rhine.

The elongated half-timbered building in front served as a split house with a residential wing above. From there, a transition leads to the medieval "Thick Tower", in which the slate was brought to the level of loading on the Rhine by means of an elevator, where today there is still a lorry at the railway embankment tunnel exit.

400 m away at Metzgergasse 13 is the Kauber Mining Museum, where you can admire numerous exhibits and photos from the tunnels.

Don't go in unless someone is there who can let you in!
