"... The "Lifesaver" by the artist couple Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely dominates Duisburg's fountain mile, a sculpture path in the city center. The path was created based on an idea by the Braunschweig architect Hartmut Rüdiger and was completed in 1993 with fountains by the artists Alt, Werthmann, Hegewald, Saint Phalle/Tinguely, Virnich and Marjanov. It runs along the Königstrasse pedestrian zone.
The "Lifesaver" is - like the world-famous Stravinsky fountain in front of the Centre Pompidou in Paris - a joint work by the two artists, with Jean Tinguely creating the movable base construction from various scrap metals. In shape and color, the rotating base forms a contrast to the voluminous polyester figure, which is painted with colorful ornaments in the typical style of Niki de Saint Phalle's "Nanas".
It depicts a bird creature with outstretched wings from which water sprays in wide arcs. A female figure clings to the body of the mythical creature. The majestic bird of myth and fantasy is depicted here as a lifesaver who has the ability to lift people above the purely mechanistic worldview of consumption and everyday life. ..."
