The Kaiserberg is a natural elevation in the Duisburg city area. It is a northwest foothill of the slate mountains on the right bank of the Rhine and, at a height of almost 80 m above sea level, is around 30 m higher than the surrounding area. The forest area of around 60 hectares has played an important role in local recreation for more than 100 years.
      History:
The forest park located between Schweizer Straße and the A3 motorway has been owned by the city of Duisburg since 1868. The Duisburg Beautification Association took over the maintenance of the area on the "Duissernberg" in 1869 and created paths and a large, tree-covered area, the so-called Sedan Meadow. The complex, which was renamed "Kaiserberg" in 1881, was withdrawn from forest use in 1882 and treated as a parking area. Until the turn of the century, a water tower, a rock formation made of natural stones with a grotto, two ponds at different heights and a round pavilion designed by the city architect Schülke were built here.
In September 1898, the then mayor, Lehr, unveiled an equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I and commissioned a cascade complex with a waterfall at the foot of the monument, which was filled in again in 1906. In 1926, the park was enlarged by 21 hectares by purchase from Haniel's property.
The 1914 terraced honorary cemetery was reduced again in 1933 in favor of the foundation of the Duisburg animal park.
During the Second World War, the Kaiser Wilhelm monument was demolished and the water tower destroyed.
In connection with the new creation of leisure facilities in the 1960s, a toboggan run and a children's playground were created in the Sedan meadow area. In addition, the pavilion was replaced by a covered resting place.
