The sculpture stands at the entrance to the Botanical Garden.
The sculpture was modeled in 1982 by the sculptor Waldemar Otto.
The artist wrote about the sculpture:
"This Adam is not an ideal image, because he represents humanity, which is about to destroy the balance of nature and itself.
This is a warning reminder that a paradise is about to be lost."
The artist Waldemar Otto was born on March 30, 1929 in Petrikau, Poland. Many of the works in public spaces can be found in Bremen, Worpswede, Hamburg, Lübeck and Schleswig, as well as in various German cities. In 1981 he was guest of honor at the Villa Massimo in Rome and in 2000 he received the Prix Florence Gold in Monaco. He lived and worked in the artists' village of Worpswede. Waldemar Otto died on May 8, 2020 in Worpswede.

The naked Adam heartily bites into the forbidden apple, thus sealing his expulsion from paradise. In the Tree of Knowledge next to him, the hand that plucked the apple despite the warning can still be seen. Waldemar Otto's bronze sculpture vividly depicts the biblical Fall of Man and presents his Adam as a coarse and overweight man who simply takes what he believes is his. His posture and gaze reveal that he feels no shame or guilt. The bite into the apple is not a timid attempt or an act of temptation, but rather a conscious grasp. The human being depicted here subjugates the earth, not as a wise and responsible ruler, but rather as an oppressor and exploiter. Thus, the bronze sculpture at the entrance to the Botanical Garden is both an accusation and a warning for greater respect for creation. Work details:

The sculpture is intended to make you think, and it does that for many people. But many people also pass by it carelessly.
