The old castle
Dornburg had been under the rule of the Wettins since 1358. After the existing ministerial castle had been destroyed in the Saxon war in 1451, the old castle was built in 1522. In the 16th century, Johann Friedrich II of Saxony carried out further renovation work, giving the castle its current form. Until 1717, the palace served as a princely seat and then became the seat of administration for the Dornburg office. From 1750 the castle was used, among other things, as a cotton mill, school and retirement home. After extensive refurbishment measures, a meeting place and conference facilities of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena are located in the old castle.
