The castle hill offers a wonderful view of Tautenburg, the old church and the former home of Friedrich Nietzsche.

As in the rest of the world, there are also numerous opportunities to rest here, and these in the shadow of the old keep are particularly beautiful.
Also special is that the castle hill divides the place in two halves, and depending on the time of day in light and shadow 😎👍

The complex is divided into two parts, of which some ditches and terraces are still visible. In the southeast corner of the western, older part, a pentagonal gate tower with battlements and a gateway has been preserved, which is often mistakenly referred to as a keep. Its chronology is unclear; it is usually dated to the first half of the 13th century, but this is obviously based on the first mention. A section of wall with opus spicatum and no lime mortar could indicate an earlier construction, but this type of walling technique is also possible after 1200 and up to the middle of the 13th century. Another dating support is a small quatrefoil window, which also dates to around the second third of the 13th century. The gate tower could therefore also be connected to new construction, conversions or extensions by the steward Rudolf II of Vargula after he acquired the castle in the 1230s and 40s. This also applies to the strong remains of the walls of a north-east wing, which supposedly housed the chapel mentioned in a building inscription from 1232. To the west, a three-storey residential building was attached to the tower, which is said to have had bay turrets on the north side.
