Strictly speaking, it was not a palace at first – the Renaissance palace was built in the middle of the 16th century as a manor house. A few decades later, it received its striking appearance today, with dormer houses and a niche portal. In 1824 Grand Duke Carl August bought the building and incorporated it into the ensemble of his Dornburg summer residence. Modifications made it more comfortable, and the regent moved here himself in the summer. The castle gained notoriety primarily through his friend and privy councilor Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Mountain biking

The Renaissance palace has been used as a museum and Goethe Memorial since 1922. Around 1960, neo-Gothic furnishings from the design phase beginning in 1824, including a staircase and the furnishings of the so-called Coat of Arms Room, were removed.

In the former Coat of Arms Room, wall paneling from Jena Palace, which had been demolished in 1905, was installed instead.
