The Löwenstein House is the oldest town house in Aachen. In addition to the town hall, the Grashaus, the Rupenstein house or the "Big House of Aachen" (Pontstraße 13, International Newspaper Museum) and church buildings, it is one of the only remaining Gothic houses in the city.

The year in which it was built is unknown. It is believed to have been built on the remains of an older house after the fire in 1344 that destroyed many of the buildings in the market square. It was not only used for residential purposes, but - proven in 1438 - was used as a wine house and hostel - as one of a total of 15 on the market

In 1969 the city of Aachen acquired the building. In 1974 parts of the administration were accommodated here. Today, Haus Löwenstein houses the City of Aachen's press and marketing department and the "Europe direct" information office.

The building on the market square in Aachen, known as Haus Löwenstein, was built parallel to Aachen Town Hall 9 and completed around 1344. Along with the cathedral and town hall, it is one of the few Gothic buildings that survived the great city fire of 1656.

        History

The original use of the house is unknown. The still preserved Staufian cellar vaults indicate that it could have been a restaurant or a wine bar. It later served as a home for wealthy Aachen citizens. It was named after Anna Löwenstein, its first known owner. The Löwenstein family was probably a noble family whose name was originally Lewe. An undocumented Ida von Löwenstein is recorded as a resident in 1478.

A special feature of the Löwenstein House is the figure of Saint Nepomuk in the niche below the corner tower. It dates from 1747 and is a memorial to the Bohemian cleric Johann von Nepomuk.

Only the facade of the medieval building remains, into which the coats of arms of the formerly independent areas that were incorporated into Aachen were inserted during renovation work in the 1970s.
