The Gerhart Hauptmann Gymnasium in Wernigerode was founded in 1538 and is now a state-run grammar school run by the Harz district.
The current grammar school was founded as a municipal school when it was handed over on March 29, 1538, after the St. Sylvestri Church gave up its Latin school, which had already been mentioned as a collegiate school in 1262.
In 1730, the lyceum at Oberpfarrkirchhof 7 was rebuilt as a baroque building.
The building was converted from a progymnasium to a boys' middle school in 1872 and later to a mixed middle school.
