"... The Fritz Behrens was a twin-engine former sea rescue cruiser of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS) of the 23.3 m class, which was built in 1981 by the Schweers shipyard in Bardenfleth under shipyard number 6442. The DGzRS -internal designation was KRS 13.

    Accident and modernization:
On September 7, 1994, an accident occurred in the port of Büsum; the passenger ship First Lady collided with the stern area of the cruiser and pushed it under water. The damaged Fritz Behrens was then repaired in the shipyard. As part of this stay in the shipyard, an extensive conversion of the cruiser took place. This conversion was externally recognizable by the portholes now installed instead of the previously rectangular window areas, but above all by the new upper control station, which was now completely closed. This corresponded to the specifications for the most modern German sea rescue cruiser developments. According to this, the control stations should be gas-tight in order to be able to carry out operations in dangerous atmospheres, for example in the event of accidents involving tankers or dangerous goods transporters with toxic cargo. However, this so-called citadel operation was not installed on the Fritz Behrens. For situations in which the rescuers depend on acoustic perceptions from outside, an outside control position with a minimum of maneuvering aids was set up on the starboard rear of the upper closed control position. In addition, the stern of the cruiser was rebuilt during the extensive shipyard time. The rear is no longer round, but square. This so-called delta hull shape (the widest part of the ship is the stern) leads to better course stability in high seas from the stern. The first class to use this new hull shape is the 23.1 meter class. ..."
