In 1821, the Baden district architect Jacob Friedrich Dyckerhoff built the town hall near Schwetzingen Palace. The building is built in the classical style of Friedrich Weinbrenner, who was Dyckerhoff's teacher. It was expanded in 1889, 1912 and 1919. In 2000 and the following years, the town hall was extensively restored.

Schwetzingen and Mannheim are best known for the baroque castle with the large castle garden. In the Lorsch Codex of 766, Schwetzingen was first mentioned as "Suezzingen". However, ceramic finds from the Neolithic period indicate that the area was inhabited much earlier. After the Schwetzingen moated castle was destroyed both in the Thirty Years' War and in the Palatinate War of Succession, Elector Johann Wilhelm had it rebuilt. Above all, the castle garden, which was laid out in the 18th century, and the Schwetzingen Festival, which take place in the castle, are well known. The town hall was built in 1821 and restored in 2000. Today the city has around 21,500 inhabitants.
