This special place was created in Bergeshövede in 1916 with the construction of the Mittelland Canal, which connected to the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The Dortmund-Ems Canal was built between 1892 and 1899 and inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Construction of the Mittelland Canal was approved in 1905. The release was followed with excitement by the population: it was finally clear that the canal connection to Hanover would branch off from the Dortmund-Ems Canal at Bergeshövede, thus creating the “Wet Triangle”. It is still an important junction in inland shipping today.
