Gravenhorst Monastery looks back on a long history. In 1256 the Mecklenburg knight Konrad von Brochterbeck founded the monastery together with his wife. The independence of the monastery or the Cistercian abbey had to assert itself again and again against attacks by secular lords, for whom the independent Gravenhorster women were a thorn in the side.

In 1808 the monastery was closed and the last Cistercian women left the abbey three years later. Today the DA, Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst, is located here, where exhibitions, concerts and educational programs take place.

There is a nice café here and the monastery is a venue for various events, such as the handicraft market.

Gravenhorst Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in the Hörsteler farming community of Gravenhorst in the Westphalian region of Tecklenburger Land. In addition to Leeden and Schale, it was one of three Cistercian monasteries that arose in the 13th century in the Tecklenburger Land.
