Schöneck was built around 1200 by the Reichsministerialen Konrad von Boppard as an imperial castle. His descendants were called Knights of Schöneck and lived in the castle until their extinction in 1508. The family consisted of several lines that lived together at the castle (Ganerbenburg). The Gallscheid court was also administered from Schöneck.

In the Eltzer feud 1331-1336, the castle was part of the protection and defensive alliance against the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg. The castle came to Kurtrier as a fief in 1354.

In 1488 Schöneck was occupied by the Palatinate troops in the so-called Beilstein War and returned to Kurtrier a short time later.

From 1508, the castle changed hands several times, but remained a Trier feudal castle. Between 1560 and 1646 Schöneck was in the possession of a branch of the Lords of Eltz. Between 1646 and about 1677, Schöneck belonged to the so-called Fideikommiss Soetern, a foundation for managing the possessions of the noble family of Sötern. Archbishop Philipp Christoph von Sötern, Trier, was the mastermind behind the transfer. Schöneck was called Schöneck Palace after baroque extensions in the mid-17th century.

In 1805 the plant came into private ownership. In the period that followed, some new buildings were built. Between 1846 and 1848, a whey spa was operated there temporarily.

In 1912 the painter Wilhelm Steinhausen acquired the facility. It has been owned by a family foundation since 1922.

A well-preserved castle. Unfortunately, it is inhabited privately.
      A detour is still worthwhile.

Nice wide view from the terrace.
