As a memorial to the many dead, such memorials or war memorials are still very important today. "Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace, as you said." However, the people who are commemorated here did not divorce in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny.
Many of the places and monuments that you come across along the way are evidence of the horrors of war and tyranny, which is still relevant and relevant today. They all have two essential functions, and this for each new generation:
-1- Commemorate and remember the victims
-2- Remind to keep the peace

              Memorial after the Franco-Prussian War

The freshly restored war memorial from 1870/71 in Germersheim
The war memorial for the fallen soldiers from Germersheim in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 has stood in front of the former fortress commandant's office on Luitpoldplatz in the center of Germersheim since 1888.
It was donated by the then War Veterans Association and was created by the sculptor Jakob Menges from Kaiserslautern. A large ceremony accompanied its inauguration on September 30, 1888. Just two years later, the association donated the memorial to the city of Germersheim, which has been working to preserve the memorial ever since.
The war memorial, made of reed sandstone from the Blieskastel area, had been showing signs of damage since 2007. In 2014, the damage had become so severe that a complete restoration was unavoidable. The upcoming redesign of the Paradeplatz, which adjoins Luitpoldplatz to the east and was also to include Luitpoldplatz and was intended to move the war memorial more towards the centre of the square, gave the impetus to tackle the restoration of the war memorial. In November 2014, the stonemasonry and stone restoration company Sauer from Mainz dismantled it and brought it to the company's own workshop. During the dismantling and on-site work in Mainz, a damage map and a restoration concept were created.

It became apparent that the crowning Bavarian lion was so damaged that a conventional restoration would not be sufficient to consider re-erecting it. In the meantime, it had to be considered making a copy of the lion for the memorial and placing the original indoors. However, from a monument conservation point of view, this was an unsatisfactory solution. After all, the aim is usually to preserve the original in its original location if possible. In addition, the lion sculpture was in too poor a condition to be presented in a museum without prior restoration.
