At present, the Greizer paper mill is the oldest of its branch still in operation in Thuringia and one of the oldest in Germany.
Greiz, located in the Thuringian part of the Vogtland, belonged to the dominion of the Rerussian princes for many centuries.
In 1589, with the permission of Prince Heinrich II von Untergreiz, a certain Hans Rot began building a paper mill outside of the town in the Aubach valley “behind the town on the Klatzschen”. On March 8, 1591, all the Lords of Reuss gave him the privilege to operate the paper mill with the right to prohibit the construction of another paper mill in Greiz, Gera, Schleiz and Lobenstein and the exclusive right to collect rags in the Reussian lands. This date, i.e. 1591, is now regarded as the start of paper production in Greiz.
The "alte papierfabrik greiz" is a voluntary and self-organized project of young people from Greiz.
It is essentially about creating a platform for the preservation and new formation of youth culture in the Greiz area, in the areas of music (this means all musical genres without right-wing ideas), as well as scenic and fine arts. Furthermore, one wants to offer opportunities for young artists to perform and to work up the history of the object and the paper industry in Greece.
