The Bamberg lawyer Dr. In addition to his own villa (see komoot.de/highlight/325382), Karl Remeis also donated the then enormous sum of 400,000 marks to the city of Bamberg to build a private observatory on the Stephansberg.
In 1888 the observatory with the two domes and the administration building was built according to plans by Hermann Eggert, who was also the architect of the Frankfurt main station and the town hall of Hanover.
The observatory also owes its free location in the middle of the city to the early ban on building for the adjacent meadow. Only the adjoining cellar of the Spezial brewery, today a heart of Bamberg's cellar culture, brings lively hustle and bustle near the observatory, but hardly any of the light pollution feared by the astronomers of the time.

Simple restaurant with smoked beer, regional dishes, a cozy dining room, and a terrace.
Please note the opening hours, otherwise the climb would be a waste of time.
