Hackescher Markt, located in the Spandauer Vorstadt district of Berlin's Mitte borough, is a transportation hub and a starting point for Berlin's nightlife.
The area where the square now stands was originally marshland. It wasn't until the demolition of the city's moat that Count Hans Christoph Friedrich von Hacke, the city commandant of Berlin, commissioned the square around 1750 on behalf of Frederick II. It quickly became known as Hackescher Markt (until 1872: Haackesche Markt), although it wasn't officially named until July 23, 1840.
