    Hackescher Markt Berlin

The Hackesche Markt in the Spandau suburb of Berlin's Mitte district is a transport hub and a starting point for Berlin's nightlife.

The site where the square is now was originally marshland. Only when the moat was demolished did the Berlin city commander, Count Hans Christoph Friedrich von Hacke, commission Friedrich II to create the square around 1750. It quickly became known as the Hackesche Markt (until 1872: Haackesche Markt), but it was not officially named until July 23, 1840.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the square developed into an inner-city hub thanks to the development of public transport. The Berlin Stock Exchange was located near the square, after which the S-Bahn station on the square was named. During the Second World War, part of the buildings surrounding the square were destroyed. The square, located in East Berlin after the division of Germany and now characterized by vacant lots, lost importance in the lee of the city center at Alexanderplatz, which was rebuilt in the 1960s.

The Hackescher Markt is the creative center between Friedrichstrasse and Alexanderplatz. With small fashion and shoe stores, designer labels and flagship stores of well-known brands, the area at the southern end of Rosenthaler Straße offers attractive shopping opportunities. Tourists and Berliners like to come here to stroll through the streets around Hackescher Markt, to sit in trendy cafés and to purchase one or the other design object fresh from the backyard workshop.
