Narrow streets and cozy houses: the charm of old Berlin comes to life again here in the Nikolaiviertel, which was built from 1981 to 1989 around the rebuilt Nikolaikirche ...
The idyllic Nikolaiviertel is the oldest residential area in Berlin. However, its medieval-looking alleys and cozy houses are mostly buildings from the post-war period. An interesting urban synthesis of reconstructed historical buildings and modern residential buildings opens up to the visitor. The Ephraim-Palais, the Knoblauch-Haus, the "Gaststätte zum Nussbaum" and the reconstructed "Judicial Arbor" of the medieval Berlin City Hall are definitely worth seeing.

Berlin was created here. The city spread out from the whey market, the "Olden Markt", as it used to be called. The foundations of the Nikolaikirche rest on the ground in which merchants and boatmen built a church on the remains of a Romanesque field stone basilica to their patron saint, St. Nicholas, at the beginning of the 13th century.
Not far, in the orphanage, there are parts of the old city wall.

The listed Nikolaiviertel in Berlin's Mitte district of the district of the same name is the oldest settlement area in the capital. Almost completely destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt by the architect Günter Stahn in 1980–1987 on behalf of the East Berlin magistrate on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city. Around the reconstructed Nikolaikirche, an ensemble of historic town houses and appropriately adapted prefabricated buildings was built on an almost medieval floor plan. It is one of the most popular sights in Berlin.

Built for the 750 year celebration. However, many of the things we see in the neighborhood today never existed in this place. Some of them were stored like some monuments or were in completely different places.
