Wolfenbüttels (around 1650) makes it clear that the Oker Canal crossing behind two rows of houses was much narrower than the one on Reichsstrasse. Both canals, as well as a third one north of Stobenstrasse, the so-called Bruchgraben, ran parallel to each other.
The Kanzleistraßen Canal is popularly known as the lazy ditch – it was built between 1730
and filled up in 1796 because of its bestial smell, the same fate befell the Bruchgraben around 1900 and also, before 1867, the main canal on the Reichsstrasse.
